Haji Mike started Dj'ing music from about 1979 and making music by 1990 was a natural progression. He was known back then for a hybrid of Jamaican Dancehall and Cypriot melodies which he called 'Vraggamuffin'. By the late 1990's he had began to collaborate with various people in different parts of the world and continues to the this date to release independent material as Dub Poet, DJ playing on various radio stations around the world.

  1. In the early 90's he fused Jamaican Dancehall culture with Cypriot traditional melodies and became popular in London and Cyprus through songs like "Vraggaman", "Stavroulla" and "Mousiki". A term like 'we laugh with our pain' often sums up those earlier works and the popularity of the songs led to many shows on the island and his eventual return to Cyprus for good. Parallel to this entertaining quality he also released heartfelt, soul searching poems, such as "When Cyprus Becomes One" which was included on the pioneering poetry release "One Hell Of a Storm" (Tongue & Groove).

Many of these earlier works were created with the inspiring producer, Zacharias 'Sugar' Hajishacalli (RiP) who developed new sounds, ideas and roads for the artist explore. Sugar remains a great mentor for all who knew him, and is dearly missed by family and friends the world over.

Haji Mike also has a PhD in Cultural Studies from CCCS Birmingham (RiP) which led to full time work as a teacher at The University of Nicosia, as an assistant professor in Communications. Passing on the knowledge and experience to next generations is central to Haji Mike's philosophy as an educationalist and artist. His job as academic has resulted in attending, participating in some great conferences and symposiums round the world, such as The Art of Record Production and Art & Social Justice.

As well as being a teacher and poet he has also worked as a freelance scribe and radio broadcaster for a couple of decades, with mags such as Straight No Chaser, Hip Hop Connection, Reggae Report USA, Radio Broto, Radio Napa, CyBC 2, BigUp Radio, Astra Radio & Inspiration FM.

Outernational, his current radio show goes out on a weekly basis on the aforementioned last three stations in Cyprus, USA and UK. It is a unique show in the sense that Haji Mike is one of the few radio people on air that plays reggae from all over the world, in different languages, as well as of course paying regular homage to the originators, the treasured foundation artists from Jamaica. a

Occasionally when time and works permit he unleashes tunes with various collaborators such as Dub Caravan, Don V Louie, Standout Selector, and Jah Billah...The net has made this much easier to do through online virtual music productions and as for the future, who knows...the best...is yet to come....
